The Art of Inside-Painting

Inside painting, also known as reverse painting, is an ancient technique of decorating the interior surface of glass objects. This art form originated during the Chinese Qing dynasty (1644–1911) and was traditionally practised by Buddhist monks on Chinese snuff bottles. While the intricate and highly esteemed craft enjoyed widespread acclaim, its appeal waned over time. In a bid to reignite interest, artisans began applying the technique to alternative decorative objects.

TOM MARTIN, established in 2010, set out to breathe new life into this cherished craft, aiming to preserve its legacy for another 200 years. By blending Western design sensibilities and storytelling with the artisanal traditions of inside painting, the brand has brought a contemporary twist to this timeless technique.

According to legend, the origins of inside painting trace back to a traveling businessman who, while resting in a temple, scratched the interior surface of his snuff bottle to extract its last remaining contents. In doing so, he inadvertently etched a pattern inside the glass. The bottle was later discovered by a young monk at the temple, sparking the birth of this extraordinary art form.
